Fill a martini glass with ice and water to keep it cold.
Prepare the garnish for the Black Manhattan. Peel an orange using a very sharp knife, cut it into a strip and insert in a toothpick.
Fill a mixing glass with ice and add the rye whiskey, Averna and Angostura bitters. Mix well using a spoon.
Strain and pour into the chilled martini glass.
Garnish the Black Manhattan with orange peel. Enjoy!
