Step 1

In a stock pot or a large saucepan over high heat, add the five cups of water. Cover the pot (or the saucepan) and bring to a boil. (See notes 1.)

Stir in the salt and macaroni. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes, or until the macaroni is cooked through. Do not drain off the water left in the pot.

Turn off the heat and add the shredded cheese and butter. Stir until the cheese and butter melts. Let sit for a few minutes to thicken before serving.

Notes:

  1. It's important to measure out the 5 cups of water for boiling the macaroni, as you won't be draining it off and it will become part of your sauce.
